At the request of DUPAN (Sustainable Eel foundation Netherlands) Bureau PAU coordinates a LIFE+ project proposal for EELLIFECYCLE. The main objective of the EELLIFECYCLE project is to aid stock recovery of the endangered European eel through tackling migration barriers.

The specific objectives of the project are:

  1. Significantly improve the ecological connectivity of the fresh water habitats concerned increasing the growth area for European eel. Increase the eel habitat area (ha) actively contributing to the population of spawning eels.
  2. Implement, exchange and replicate short- and long-term solutions of solving eel migration barriers.
  3. Involve community and important stakeholders, like fishermen, anglers, water boards, electric companies, citizens and regional and local authorities working together on eel recovery and improved ecological management.

Timeline: July 2016 – September 2017
